Understanding the Trauma of Foster Care

Entering the foster care system is one of the most life-changing and emotionally overwhelming experiences a child can face. Many children are removed from everything familiar—their home, school, neighborhood, pets, possessions, and sometimes ……even their siblings—with little warning. While the move is often made to protect their safety and well-being, children may not fully understand why it is happening. Instead, they are left feeling afraid, confused, heartbroken, and uncertain about what comes next.

Children entering foster care, often experience a profound sense of loss. They may grieve the separation from their parents, even when those relationships were difficult, because family connections are deeply meaningful. Many also struggle with feelings of guilt, wondering if they did something wrong or believing they are somehow responsible for what has happened. The uncertainty of moving into an unfamiliar home and meeting new caregivers can leave them feeling isolated and anxious at a time when they need comfort the most.

The way a child experiences this transition can leave a lasting impression. When their belongings are placed into a trash bag, it can unintentionally reinforce feelings of shame, instability, or being overlooked. While a backpack, duffel bag, or suitcase cannot erase the trauma they have experienced, it can send a very different message: You are important. You are worthy of care. Your belongings—and your story—matter. Small acts of dignity can help children feel seen and valued during an incredibly difficult season of life.
